Ħal Għaxaq’s Green Revolution: 25,000 sqm Park Underway

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a small army of workers and machinery are transforming a once-neglected 25,000 square metre plot into a green oasis. The ambitious project, spearheaded by the local council, is set to redefine public spaces in this quiet, rural town.

From Neglect to New Life

Tucked away at the corner of Triq San Ġorġ and Triq il-Ħamrun, this sprawling site has seen better days. Littered with overgrown weeds, discarded debris, and forgotten dreams, it’s hard to imagine the lush park that’s taking shape. But that’s exactly what’s happening, thanks to a €1.2 million investment from the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects.

What’s in Store?

The masterplan includes a children’s playground, a senior citizens’ area, a multi-purpose sports pitch, and extensive green spaces for picnics and leisure. A network of pathways will weave through the park, connecting it to the town centre and nearby residential areas. The pièce de résistance? A 1,000 square metre lake, complete with a fountain and seating areas.

But it’s not just about aesthetics. The park is designed to be sustainable and eco-friendly. Rainwater harvesting systems will collect and store water for irrigation, while solar panels will generate electricity for the park’s lighting. Native plants will provide habitats for local wildlife, and educational signage will inform visitors about the park’s environmental features.

Community at the Core

Ħal Għaxaq’s residents are at the heart of this project. The local council has been actively engaging with the community, seeking their input and ideas. “We want this park to reflect our town’s identity and heritage,” says Mayor Mario Fava. “We’re not just building a park; we’re creating a community space where people can come together, enjoy nature, and celebrate our culture.”

Once completed, the park is expected to boost Ħaxaq’s tourism potential, attracting visitors from nearby towns and beyond. But more importantly, it’s set to become a beloved local hangout, a place where families can picnic, kids can play, and seniors can relax in the shade.

With the first phase of construction already underway, the park is on track to open its gates in late 2023. So, Ħal Għaxaq residents, get ready to embrace your new green lung. And to everyone else, mark your calendars – Ħal Għaxaq’s got a new hotspot in the making!
