Malta to Debut at Gwangju Biennale 2026

Malta’s Artistic Moment: Set to Shine at Gwangju Biennale 2026

Imagine this: Malta, our tiny archipelago in the Mediterranean, is about to leave its artistic mark on the global stage. In 2026, our islands will debut at the prestigious Gwangju Biennale, South Korea’s contemporary art extravaganza. This isn’t just a moment for our artists; it’s a chance for Malta to showcase its unique culture and heritage to the world.

From Valletta to Gwangju: A Cultural Leap

Malta’s inclusion in the 13th edition of the Gwangju Biennale is a testament to our growing presence in the international art scene. Since Valletta’s reign as European Capital of Culture in 2018, our artistic community has been buzzing with creativity and energy. Now, we’re ready to take that energy global, all the way to South Korea.

The Gwangju Biennale, held every two years, is a mammoth event. It attracts over 100,000 visitors, featuring works from hundreds of artists. Malta’s debut will be a significant moment, a chance to introduce our unique story and artistic identity to a global audience.

Preparing for the Spotlight: What’s Next?

With four years to go, preparations are already underway. The Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, together with the Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, are working tirelessly to ensure our debut is nothing short of spectacular.

Local artists are thrilled. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Maltese art to reach a wider audience,” says Maltese artistustin Grech. “It’s a chance for us to show the world what we’re made of.” Grech, known for his intricate installations, is one of many local artists being considered for the Biennale.

But it’s not just about our artists. This is a chance for Malta to shine. Expect to see our unique history, culture, and landscapes reflected in the works chosen for the Biennale. From the ancient megalithic temples to the vibrant streets of Valletta, our islands have a story to tell, and our artists will be the ones telling it.
