Malta Warned as Heatwave Claims Two Lives in France

Heatwave Claims Two Lives in France, Sparking Local Warnings

Malta, basking in its usual summer glow, finds itself in an unusual position – not as the heatwave hotspot, but as a concerned observer. The latest heatwave sweeping across Europe has left two French children dead, trapped in a car, and has Maltese authorities issuing their own warnings.

Malta’s Weather: Hot, But Not Record-Breaking

While temperatures in Malta have been soaring, reaching highs of 38°C in some parts of the island, they haven’t quite matched the scorching 45°C recorded in France. Yet, the tragic events across the Mediterranean have prompted local meteorological office Malta Weather to issue heatwave warnings for the coming days.

Dr.ustin Farrugia, a meteorologist at Malta Weather, explains, “Though we’re not experiencing the extreme temperatures seen in France, our heat can still be dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups. We’re advising everyone to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid peak sun hours.”

Local Response: Warnings and Precautions

Malta’s health authorities have joined the call for caution. The Ministry of Health has issued guidelines, urging the public to check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours, and reminding everyone to never leave children or pets in parked cars.

In Valletta, the capital city’s local council has set up additional water stations and extended opening hours for public spaces, providing respite from the heat. Councilor Alexia Pace comments, “We’re doing our part to ensure our city remains a cool oasis during these hot days. We urge everyone to do their part too.”

Meanwhile, schools across the island have been advised to reschedule outdoor activities and sports events to cooler hours. The Education Ministry has also reminded teachers to keep classrooms cool and ensure students stay hydrated.
