Malta’s ‘Unblinking’ Project Reveals Island’s Hidden Worlds
Unveiling the Unseen: A Glimpse into Malta’s Hidden Worlds
Imagine strolling along the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the sun casting its golden rays on the historic buildings. Now, imagine if you could see beyond the visible, into the very soul of these structures, and the island itself. This is exactly what a group of local artists and scientists are aiming to do with their innovative project, ‘Unblinking’.
Unblinking: A Fusion of Art and Science
‘Unblinking’ is a unique collaboration between Malta’s leading artists and scientists, aiming to make the invisible visible. The project, funded by the Malta Arts Council, uses cutting-edge technology to reveal the hidden layers of Malta’s landscapes, architecture, and even its people. From infrared and ultraviolet light to X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging, these artists are painting with light, creating a new perspective on our familiar world.
At the heart of this project is the belief that art can be a powerful tool for scientific exploration and communication. “We’re not just creating art,” says project lead and local artist, Joseph Xuereb. “We’re opening a new window into our world, inviting everyone to see Malta in a whole new light.”
Unblinking in Action: From Mdina to Marsaxlokk
From the ancient walls of Mdina to the vibrant fishing village of Marsaxlokk, ‘Unblinking’ has been transforming Malta’s landscapes and landmarks into stunning, otherworldly visions. In Mdina, the project has revealed the city’s hidden layers of history, with infrared images bringing to life the foundations of long-gone structures. Meanwhile, in Marsaxlokk, ultraviolet light has illuminated the bioluminescent plankton in the sea, creating a mesmerizing display of natural light art.
But ‘Unblinking’ isn’t just about pretty pictures. It’s also about engaging the public in scientific exploration. The project has been holding workshops and exhibitions across Malta, inviting everyone from schoolchildren to seniors to see the world through new eyes. “We’ve seen people’s faces light up when they see their hometown in a completely new way,” says Xuereb. “That’s what makes this project so special.”
One of the most striking installations was at the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, where the project used 3D scanning technology to create a digital map of the prehistoric underground temple. The result was a breathtaking virtual reality experience that allowed visitors to explore the site in a whole new way.
: Unblinking’s Next Chapter
With the first phase of the project completed, ‘Unblinking’ is now looking to the future. The team is planning to expand the project to include more locations around Malta, from the ancient temples of Mnajdra to the modern skyline of Birkirkara. They’re also exploring new technologies, from drones to augmented reality, to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
But perhaps the most exciting development is the project’s plans to engage with the local community even more deeply. “We want ‘Unblinking’ to be more than just a series of art installations,” says Xuereb. “We want it to be a conversation starter, a way to bring people together and explore the world around us.”
So, the next time you’re walking down Republic Street, or any other street in Malta, remember, there’s more to see than meets the eye. And who knows, you might just catch a glimpse of the unseen, thanks to ‘Unblinking’.
