Maltese Soldiers Return Home from UNIFIL Mission

As the sun set over the Grand Harbour, a sense of anticipation filled the air at the Mtarfa Barracks. Today was the day that Maltese soldiers, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), were returning home after months of serving in the peace-keeping mission.

Homecoming After Six Months

For the past six months, these soldiers have been stationed in Lebanon, working tirelessly to maintain security and stability in the region. Their mission, under the UN flag, has been a testament to Malta’s commitment to international peace and security. Now, they were finally coming home.

Reunions at the Barracks

The Mtarfa Barracks was a flurry of activity as families and friends gathered to welcome their loved ones. Children clutched bouquets of flowers, their eyes wide with excitement and a touch of nerves. Parents stood tall, pride etched on their faces, while grandparents held onto each other, their eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Among the crowd was Maria, a local woman from Birkirkara. Her son, Joseph, was one of the soldiers returning today. “I’ve missed him so much,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “It’s not easy, knowing your child is so far away, but I’m incredibly proud of what he’s doing.”

Reflections on Service

As the soldiers began to disembark from the buses, a cheer erupted from the crowd. One by one, they were greeted with hugs, kisses, and tears of joy. Among them was Sergeant Matthew Azzopardi from Żebbuġ.

“It’s been a challenging six months,” he reflected. “But it’s also been incredibly rewarding. Seeing the impact we can have on people’s lives, even in small ways, makes it all worthwhile.”

When asked about the most memorable moment of his deployment, Sergeant Azzopardi smiled. “There was this one time when we helped a local family repair their home after a storm. The gratitude they showed us, it was… it was something I’ll never forget.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the Mtarfa Barracks began to empty. The soldiers, now reunited with their loved ones, looked forward to some well-deserved rest and quality time at home. But for many, the memories of their service in Lebanon would remain, a reminder of the commitment and sacrifice that comes with being a peacekeeper.
