Marsaxlokk’s Massive Clean-Up: 448kg of Waste Collected
Imagine this: a mountain of waste, taller than a grown man, piled up on the outskirts of Marsaxlokk. This wasn’t a scene from a dystopian film, but the reality of last weekend’s clean-up operation in the southern village. A whopping 448kg of waste was collected, highlighting the pressing issue of littering in our communities.
Community Spirit in Action
Over 50 volunteers turned out to lend a hand, armed with gloves, bags, and a determination to make a difference. They scoured the streets, alleys, and beaches, their efforts coordinated by the local council and supported by the NGO Wasteserv. The clean-up targeted hotspots like the Marsaxlokk Bay, Triq il-Kbira, and the area around the popular Sunday fish market.
“It’s heartening to see so many people come together for a common cause,” said Joe, a local resident who has been participating in these clean-ups for years. “Marsaxlokk is our home, and it’s our responsibility to keep it clean and beautiful.”
What Was Found and Why It Matters
The collected waste included a mix of plastic, glass, paper, and metal. Among the items found were old fishing nets, discarded fishing gear, and even a few abandoned fishing boats. These aren’t just eyesores; they pose a threat to marine life and can damage the environment.
According to Dr. Martin, a local marine biologist, “The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most polluted in the world. Every bit of waste we remove from our shores helps protect our marine ecosystem.”
This clean-up is part of a larger initiative by the local council to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices. Similar events are planned for other areas in Malta in the coming months.
