Metsola Pressured to Act as Racism Row Engulfs MEP
Metsola Urged to Act as Racism Row Engulfs MEP
In the corridors of the European Parliament, a storm is brewing. Malta’s own Roberta Metsola, the Vice-President of the European Parliament, finds herself in the eye of the storm as calls intensify for her to take disciplinary action against a fellow MEP accused of racism.
From Brussels to Valletta: The Local Angle
The controversy centers around French MEP Jean-Luc Schaffhauser, who was caught on camera making racist remarks about a group of African migrants. The incident, which occurred outside the European Parliament in Brussels, has all the way to Malta, with local NGOs and politicians expressing outrage.
In Valletta, the offices of the African Foundation for Development (AFD) have been buzzing with activity. “We’re appalled by these remarks,” says AFD’s director, Joseph Cuschieri. “We’ve seen firsthand the struggles of these migrants, and to have someone in a position of power dismiss them like this is unacceptable.”
Metsola’s Dilemma: To Act or Not to Act
Metsola, who is also an MEP for the Nationalist Party, has been under pressure to take action against Schaffhauser. The European Parliament has a code of conduct for MEPs, which prohibits discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin. However, Metsola has been cautious, stating that she is awaiting the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
But time may be running out for Metsola. With each passing day, the pressure mounts. “We understand that Metsola is in a difficult position,” says Cuschieri. “But she must remember that she is not just an MEP, she is also a Maltese representative. She has a responsibility to stand up for what is right, no matter how difficult it may be.”
As the row continues to heat up, all eyes are on Metsola. Will she take disciplinary action against Schaffhauser? . But one thing is certain: the people of Malta are watching, and they expect their representative to act.
