PN Adviser’s U-Turn: From Critic to Key Player in Ġgantija Heights Project

Imagine standing at the foot of Ġgantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Xagħra, and looking up at the proposed Ġgantija Heights project. It’s a sight that has sparked controversy, with the Nationalist Party (PN) once describing it as ‘scandalous’. Yet, a recent revelation has turned the narrative on its head: a PN adviser is now involved in the very project they once condemned.

From Opposition to Involvement

In 2019, the PN was vocal in its criticism of the Labour government’s plans to build luxury apartments and a five-star hotel near the ancient Ġgantija Temples. The party’s then spokesperson for the environment, Jason Azzopardi, didn’t mince his words, labeling the project ‘an insult to our heritage’. Fast forward to 2023, and a twist in the tale: it’s been revealed that a PN political adviser, Dr. Mario Mallia, is now part of the team working on the very same project.

Dr. Mallia, a lawyer by profession, has been involved in various political roles, including serving as a PN MP from 2008 to 2013. His new role as a legal consultant for the Ġgantija Heights project has raised eyebrows, with critics questioning the party’s stance on the development.

PN’s Response: ‘No Conflict of Interest’

The PN has been quick to defend Dr. Mallia’s involvement, insisting there’s no conflict of interest. Party spokesperson Ryan Callus stated, “Dr. Mallia is not a member of the PN’s executive committee and does not hold any political office. His work as a lawyer is separate from his political activities.”

However, opposition MP Jason Azzopardi, who was once critical of the project, now sees a potential conflict. “When we criticized the project, we did so based on principle, not politics. Now, to have a PN political adviser involved, it raises questions about the party’s sincerity,” he said.

Local Residents: Divided Opinions

Opinions among Xagħra residents are divided. While some see the project as an opportunity for economic growth, others fear it could compromise the area’s rural character and heritage. Maria, a local resident who didn’t want to give her last name, told Hot Malta, “I’m not against development, but not at the expense of our cultural heritage. We need to protect what we have.”

On the other hand, Tony, a local businessman, believes the project could bring benefits. “It could create jobs and attract more tourists. We can’t stop progress, can we?” he said.
