Arno the Dog’s Miraculous Sea Rescue
Local Hero: Arno the Dog’s Incredible Sea Rescue
Imagine, if you will, the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, its waves glistening under the Maltese sun. Now, picture a small, scared dog, Arno, clinging to a piece of debris, fighting for his life after falling overboard from a fishing boat. This was the harrowing scene that unfolded off the coast of Marsaxlokk on a seemingly ordinary day.
Arno’s Plight: Over Two Hours at Sea
Arno, a one-year-old mixed breed, had been enjoying a day out with his owner, fisherman Joseph Xuereb, when disaster struck. In a moment’s distraction, Arno slipped from the boat and plunged into the sea. Joseph, horrified, immediately raised the alarm. The Malta Maritime Squadron was swift to respond, but the search was challenging. The sea was rough, and Arno was nowhere to be seen.
For over two hours, Arno battled the waves, his tiny body buoyed by a piece of Styrofoam. The Malta Maritime Squadron, with their specialized rescue equipment, scoured the area. Meanwhile, Joseph, desperate to save his beloved pet, joined the search on his own boat. The community rallied, with nearby fishermen also lending a hand.
A Miraculous Rescue
Just as hope was beginning to fade, a glimmer of luck shone through. A passing yacht spotted Arno, exhausted and shivering, still clinging to his makeshift float. The yacht’s crew carefully maneuvered their vessel, and with a skilled throw of a life jacket, they managed to pull Arno to safety. Overjoyed, Joseph rushed to meet them at the Marsaxlokk harbor, where a tearful reunion took place.
Arno was immediately taken to the vet, where he was found to be dehydrated and exhausted but otherwise unharmed. His incredible story of survival has since captured the hearts of Maltese, with many hailing him as a local hero.
In an interview with Hot Malta, Joseph Xuereb expressed his gratitude, “I can’t thank the Malta Maritime Squadron and the yacht crew enough. And to see Arno wagging his tail after all he’s been through, it’s a miracle.”
