Ħal Għaxaq’s 25,000 sqm Green Oasis Takes Shape

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a once-neglected stretch of land is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The 25,000 square metre open space, located near the historic Ħal Għaxaq Parish Church, is being rejuvenated into a vibrant public hub, set to become the jewel in the crown of this rural Maltese town.

From Neglect to New Life

For years, this expansive plot, bounded by Triq San Ġorġ and Triq il-Ħelsien, lay dormant, its potential untapped. But that’s all changing now. The Ħal Għaxaq Local Council, in collaboration with the Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change, has embarked on an ambitious project to turn this space into a green oasis.

What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq’s New Green Lung

The masterplan for the area, designed by local architects, envisions a space that caters to the needs of the community while preserving the environment. Here’s what residents and visitors can look forward to:

    • Green Spaces: Lush greenery will dominate the scene, with native plants and trees providing shade and enhancing biodiversity.
    • Parks and Playgrounds: Families will enjoy sprawling parks and age-appropriate playgrounds, ensuring fun for children of all ages.
    • Sports Facilities: Sports enthusiasts will have access to new facilities, including a multi-purpose sports area and a skate park.
    • Community Hub: A central community hub will host events, markets, and cultural activities, fostering a sense of community.
    • Accessibility: The space will be fully accessible, with pedestrian paths, cycling lanes, and ample parking for people of all abilities.

Progress on the Ground

Work is well underway, with earthmoving equipment transforming the scene. The first phase, which includes site preparation and the laying of infrastructure, is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The second phase, focusing on the construction of facilities and the planting of greenery, will follow.

The project is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about people. The Ħal Għaxaq Local Council has been engaging with the community, seeking their input and ensuring the space caters to their needs. “This is their space, and we want them to feel proud of it,” says Mayor Joe Attard.

Once completed, this 25,000 square metre open space will be more than just a park. It will be a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together and dreams big. It will be a space where families gather, where children play, where sports are enjoyed, and where culture thrives. It will be Ħal Għaxaq’s green heart.
