Ħal Għaxaq’s Forgotten Plot Blooms into Largest Southern Harbour Park

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a once-neglected 25,000 square metre plot is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The open space, long overgrown with weeds and litter, is being reclaimed and reshaped into a vibrant public park, set to become the largest of its kind in the Southern Harbour region.

From Neglect to New Life

For years, this expansive plot at Triq San Ġorġ, Ħal Għaxaq, has been an eyesore, a stark contrast to the picturesque village it lies in. But that’s all about to change. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has given the green light to a project that promises to turn this forgotten space into a green oasis.

What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq?

The planned park, named ‘Il-Ħaġar Ta’ Ħal Għaxaq’, will feature a variety of recreational facilities. There are plans for a children’s play area, a senior citizens’ corner, a skate park, and even a dog park. The central attraction, however, will be a large, open green space perfect for picnics, sports, or simply relaxing under the Maltese sun.

But the park isn’t just about leisure. It’s also about sustainability. The project includes plans for rainwater harvesting systems, native tree plantations, and eco-friendly pathways. The aim is to create a space that’s not just enjoyable, but also environmentally responsible.

Community Involvement

This isn’t just a top-down project. The local council and the developers have been working hand in hand with the community to ensure that the park caters to the needs and wishes of Ħal Għaxaq’s residents. Public consultations have been held, and the feedback has been integrated into the design.

Ġużi Borg, the mayor of Ħal Għaxaq, expressed his excitement about the project, “This park will not only add a significant green lung to our village but also bring our community closer together. We’re looking forward to seeing this space come alive.”

Works are expected to be completed by late 2023, transforming Triq San Ġorġ into a bustling hub of activity, filled with the laughter of children, the rustling of leaves, and the joy of a community coming together.
