Ħal Għaxaq’s Green Heart: A 25,000 sqm Transformation

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a once-neglected expanse of land is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The 25,000 square metre open space, located just off Triq San Girgor, is being revived, set to become a green lung and a hub of community activity.

From Neglect to New Life

For years, this vast tract of land was an eyesore, overgrown with weeds and littered with debris. But thanks to a €1.5 million investment from the local council, the area is now unrecognizable. Bulldozers and diggers have given way to planting equipment and teams of gardeners, as the space is meticulously prepared for its new lease of life.

What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq’s New Green Space?

Plans for the area are ambitious. The project, dubbed ‘Ħal Għaxaq Green Heart’, includes the planting of over 500 trees and the creation of walking paths that will wind through the space, connecting it to the village’s main streets. A children’s playground, a community garden, and a performance area for cultural events are also in the pipeline.

But perhaps the most exciting feature will be the ‘Green Lab’. This innovative space will serve as an educational hub, where students and visitors can learn about sustainable gardening, permaculture, and environmental conservation. It’s a nod to Ħal Għaxaq’s agricultural past and a look towards a greener future.

Community Involvement: The Heart of the Project

From the outset, the project has been designed with community involvement at its core. Local residents have been invited to share their ideas and suggestions, and many have already volunteered their time to help with the planting and maintenance of the space.

“This is our village’s green heart, and we want it to beat strongly,” says Joe Xuereb, a local resident and one of the project’s key volunteers. “We’re not just creating a park; we’re creating a community.”
