Ħal Għaxaq’s Industrial Past Makes Way for Green Future

In the heart of Ħal Għaxaq, a once bustling industrial site is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The sprawling 25,000 square metre expanse, once dominated by the hum of machinery and the scent of industry, is being reborn as a verdant, community-focused open space. The project, a joint venture between the local council and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), is set to breathe new life into this southern town.

From Industry to Ecology

For decades, the site hosted a thriving manufacturing plant. Now, the echoes of industry are being replaced by the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. The redevelopment, scheduled for completion by the end of 2023, aims to create a green lung in the middle of Ħal Għaxaq, providing a much-needed recreational space for the community.

What’s in Store for Ħal Għaxaq?

The revamped open space, located just off Triq San Ġorġ Preca, will feature a variety of amenities designed to cater to the diverse needs of the local community. Plans include a children’s play area, a fitness zone, walking and cycling paths, and plenty of green spaces for picnics and relaxation. The project also includes the creation of a small lake, which will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also serve as a habitat for local wildlife.

the project is set to include a community garden, where residents can grow their own produce. This initiative, spearheaded by the local council, is aimed at fostering a sense of community and encouraging sustainable living. “We want to create a space where people can come together, whether it’s to enjoy a walk, play with their children, or grow their own vegetables,” says Mayor of Ħal Għaxaq, Mario Fava.

Sustainability at the Core

Sustainability is a key focus of the project. The open space will be designed to collect and reuse rainwater, reducing water waste and promoting environmental conservation. The use of native, drought-resistant plants will also help to minimize water usage and create a habitat for local flora and fauna.

The project is not just about creating a new open space; it’s about transforming a piece of Ħal Għaxaq’s history into a sustainable, community-focused future. As Fava puts it, “This is not just a park; it’s a symbol of our commitment to our community and to the environment.”
