Ian Rankin Brings His Crime-Writing Magic to Malta
Malta’s literary scene is buzzing with anticipation as crime author Ian Rankin is set to grace the Malta Book Festival as this year’s international guest. The Edinburgh-based writer, renowned for his Inspector Rebus series, will be gracing our shores from 9th to 12th November, offering local bookworms a unique opportunity to engage with one of the world’s most celebrated crime authors.
Rankin’s Malta Connection
Rankin’s visit to Malta isn’t just another stop on his literary tour. The author has a personal connection to our islands. His mother, Agnes, was born in Żabbar, Malta, and emigrated to Scotland in the 1940s. Rankin, who has visited Malta several times, has spoken about the influence his Maltese heritage has had on his writing. “My Maltese roots have always been a part of my identity,” he told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “I’m looking forward to exploring more of my heritage and sharing my stories with my Maltese cousins.”
What to Expect
Rankin’s visit will kick off with a press conference at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta on 9th November. He will then participate in a series of events throughout the festival, including book signings, panel discussions, and a special event at the University of Malta. Rankin will also be leading a workshop for aspiring writers, offering insights into his craft and the crime genre.
Fans can look forward to hearing about Rankin’s latest novel, “A Song for the Dark Times,” the 23rd in the Inspector Rebus series. The novel, published in September, has already garnered critical acclaim. Rankin will also discuss his other works, including the stand-alone novel “Even Dogs in the Wild” and his short story collection “The Beat Goes On.”
Malta Book Festival: A Growing Literary Event
The Malta Book Festival, now in its 14th edition, has grown to become one of the island’s premier cultural events. Held annually in November, the festival brings together local and international authors, publishers, and book lovers. This year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a packed programme of events, including literary talks, workshops, and book launches.
Rankin’s visit is a testament to the festival’s growing reputation on the international literary scene. Previous international guests have included Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, and Haruki Murakami. The festival is organised by the National Book Council of Malta and is held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.
