Malta’s New Bus Routes: Smooth Sailing Ahead?
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Take Effect Today
Commuters across Malta woke up to a new reality this morning as the Public Transport Services regulator rolled out its latest revision of bus routes. The changes, which have been in the works for over a year, aim to improve connectivity and efficiency. However, the initial impact was far from smooth sailing, with traffic congestion reported along key routes such as the Triq San Gwann and Triq L-Imqabba.
New Routes: What You Need to Know
The most significant change is the introduction of new circular routes in key urban areas. Buses will now run in loops around towns like Birkirkara, Msida, and Żabbar, reducing wait times and improving frequency. Additionally, several routes have been extended to better serve peripheral areas. For instance, the X3 route now reaches as far as Mgarr, providing a direct link to Gozo.
However, not all changes were welcomed. The cancellation of the night bus service on certain routes has raised concerns among late-night workers and revellers. “I rely on the night bus to get home from my shift at the hospital,” said Dr. Maria Grech, a resident of Żurrieq. “I’m not sure how I’m supposed to manage this change.”
Govt. Urges Patience as Kinks Are Worked Out
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has acknowledged the teething problems and urged commuters to bear with them. “We understand that these changes can be disruptive in the short term,” a spokesperson said. “But we’re confident that they will lead to a more efficient and user-friendly public transport system in the long run.”
The ministry has set up a dedicated helpline to assist commuters with queries and report issues. They also encourage users to download the updated Moovit app, which now reflects the new routes.
As Malta’s public transport system navigates this transition, one thing is clear: change is never easy. But with improved connectivity and efficiency on the horizon, many are hopeful that the temporary inconveniences will be worth it.
