PN Adviser’s Irony: Ġgantija Heights Project He Once Condemned, Now Benefits From
Imagine this: you’re walking down Triq San Pawl in Xagħra, the sun casting a warm glow on the ancient Ġgantija Temples. Suddenly, you notice a stark contrast to the traditional Maltese scene – a towering construction site. This is Ġgantija Heights, a project that the Nationalist Party (PN) once labelled ‘scandalous’, but now has one of its top advisers benefiting from.
From Condemnation to Controversy
In 2018, then PN leader Adrian Delia was quick to criticise the Labour government’s Ġgantija Heights project. He accused them of ‘selling off’ Malta’s cultural heritage, with the project set to include luxury apartments and a five-star hotel near the prehistoric temples. Fast forward to 2022, and PN’s current General Secretary, Clyde Puli, finds himself entangled in a web of irony and controversy.
Documents obtained by Hot Malta reveal that Puli, a long-time PN stalwart, is now a shareholder in a company that has been granted a permit to develop a plot of land adjacent to the Ġgantija Temples. The plot, measuring around 1,200 square metres, is set to be transformed into a luxury villa.
PN’s Response: ‘No Conflict of Interest’
When approached for comment, the PN was quick to defend Puli. A party spokesperson stated, “There is no conflict of interest here. Clyde Puli, in his personal capacity, has invested in a legitimate business venture. His role within the party has no bearing on this matter.” However, critics argue that the irony of the situation is too glaring to ignore.
Dr. Marthese Portelli, a prominent architect and cultural heritage advocate, told Hot Malta, “This project is a slap in the face to those who once condemned it. It’s a clear example of how political rhetoric can be conveniently forgotten when personal interests are at stake.”
: Ġgantija Heights and Beyond
The Ġgantija Heights project, despite initial controversies, is now moving forward. The government has assured that the development will respect the UNESCO World Heritage Site status of the Ġgantija Temples. As for Puli’s involvement, how this will play out in the upcoming political scene.
As we stroll past the Ġgantija Temples, we can’t help but wonder: will the luxury villa under construction become a symbol of political irony, or a testament to Malta’s evolving cultural scene?
