Police Consider Action Against Inspector Over ‘Dehumanising’ Facebook Post

Imagine scrolling through your Facebook feed, only to come across a post from a high-ranking police officer that leaves you feeling cold. That’s exactly what happened when Inspector Keith Mallia shared a ‘dehumanising’ post, sparking outrage and leading the police to consider disciplinary action.

What Did the Post Say?

The post in question, shared on Mallia’s personal Facebook page, was a meme depicting a man in a wheelchair being pushed by another man. The caption read, “When your friend offers to push you in your wheelchair… But you know he’s just gonna try and make it go faster downhill.” The problem? The man in the wheelchair was photoshopped to look like a person with Down syndrome.

Needless to say, the post was seen as offensive and dehumanising by many, leading to a wave of criticism and calls for action.

Reaction from the Public and Authorities

The post quickly went viral, with many expressing their outrage on social media. The Malta Down Syndrome Association was among those who condemned the post, stating that it was “not only offensive but also extremely hurtful to people with Down syndrome and their families.”

The police were swift to respond, with the Commissioner of Police, Lawrence Cutajar, stating that the post was “totally inappropriate and unacceptable.” The police force launched an investigation, and Mallia was removed from his post pending the outcome.

Where Do We Go from Here?

This incident has sparked a conversation about the responsibilities of public officials on social media. While Mallia’s post was on his personal page, many argue that his position as a police inspector gives him a public figure status, making his actions subject to greater scrutiny.

As for Mallia, he has since apologised for the post, stating that it was not his intention to cause offence. However, many feel that this is not enough, and that disciplinary action should be taken to ensure that such behaviour is not tolerated within the police force.

what the outcome of this investigation will be. But one thing is clear: this incident has highlighted the importance of respect and understanding, not just in our interactions with each other, but also in the way we perceive and treat those with disabilities.
