Teen’s Fake Kidnapping Stuns Malta

In an unusual turn of events, a 19-year-old Maltese teenager admitted to police that he had orchestrated his own abduction, concocting an elaborate scheme involving a taxi driver and a fake kidnapper. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found safe and sound in a secluded area off Triq il-Kappillan Mifsud in Żurrieq, after a frantic search by police and his worried family.

Staging a Kidnapping

The teenager, a resident of Birkirkara, hatched the plan after growing frustrated with his daily routine. He wanted to “shake things up,” he told police, and decided to stage his own kidnapping. He approached a taxi driver, promising a hefty fare if he would drive him to a secluded location and pretend to be a kidnapper. The driver, unaware of the teenager’s true intentions, complied.

Fake Kidnapping Gone Wrong

The plan began to unravel when the teenager’s family reported him missing, triggering a full-scale search operation. The police, acting on a tip-off, found the teenager and the taxi driver in Żurrieq. The teenager confessed to the ruse, leaving both the police and the taxi driver bewildered. “I just wanted to experience something different, something exciting,” the teenager told police.

The taxi driver, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed his shock at the teenager’s actions. “I thought I was helping him out with a strange request, but I had no idea he was planning something like this,” he said.

Lessons Learned

While the teenager’s actions were reckless and caused unnecessary worry to his family and the police, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of communication and understanding the potential consequences of our actions. The teenager, who was released without charge, expressed remorse for his actions and promised to think more carefully in the future.

Inspector Joseph Vella, who led the investigation, warned, “While this incident ended safely, it could have had serious consequences. We urge the public to think carefully before acting on impulse and to always communicate their whereabouts to their loved ones.”
