Truck Fire on Marfa Road Causes Traffic Chaos
Flames Lick Marfa Road: Truck Fire Causes Traffic Chaos
Drivers on Marfa Road were met with an unexpected inferno on Tuesday afternoon as a truck, laden with cargo, burst into flames. The blaze, which sent plumes of black smoke into the sky, caused traffic to grind to a halt and left motorists staring in disbelief.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
Emergency services were swiftly on the scene, with firefighters from the Marsa and Birkirkara stations working together to extinguish the fire. The truck, a charred hulk by the time the flames were brought under control, was carrying a full load of plastic goods destined for a distribution centre in Hal Far.
“We received numerous calls about the fire,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department. “The truck was completely engulfed when we arrived, but our crews managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby vehicles.”
Traffic Chaos and Delays
The incident caused significant traffic delays, with motorists advised to avoid the area. Commuters heading towards the airport were particularly affected, with some reporting delays of up to an hour. “I was stuck in traffic for what felt like an eternity,” said one driver. “I could see the smoke from miles away, but it was impossible to get anywhere near the scene.”
Traffic wardens were deployed to help direct traffic and keep the roads clear for emergency services. “It was a challenging situation,” said a traffic warden on the scene. “But we managed to keep the roads clear for the fire engines and ambulances.”
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early reports suggest it may have been caused by an electrical fault. The driver of the truck was uninjured and is said to be assisting police with their inquiries.
“We’re still gathering information about what happened,” said a police spokesperson. “We’re treating the fire as an accident at this stage, but we’re keeping an open mind.”
