Two Workers Plummet Down Birkirkara Apartment Shaft
Imagine, if you will, the stark contrast of a clear blue Maltese sky against the stark, cold steel of an apartment block’s elevator shaft. This was the scene that unfolded on Tuesday morning at a residential block in Birkirkara, when two workers, fortunately alive but seriously injured, plummeted down the shaft.
An Unthinkable Accident
The incident occurred at around 9:30 AM at Triq il-Karmnu, a bustling street in the heart of Birkirkara. The two workers, both in their 40s, were employed by a local maintenance company and were carrying out routine servicing on the building’s elevators. In a freak accident, the platform they were standing on gave way, sending them tumbling down the shaft.
Rescue and Aftermath
The fall was stopped by the elevator car itself, which thankfully cushioned their descent. Emergency services, including the Civil Protection Department and the Malta Police Force, were swiftly on the scene. The injured workers were extricated from the shaft and transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable but serious condition.
Residents of the block, many of whom were awake and preparing for their day, were left shaken by the incident. “I heard a loud crash and then shouting,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s scary to think that something like this can happen right under your nose.”
Investigation and Safety Concerns
The incident has sparked concerns about safety standards in Malta’s residential buildings. While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, some have pointed to the age of the building and the potential lack of regular maintenance as possible factors.
In response, the Building Regulation Office has announced a review of elevator safety standards in residential buildings. “We cannot afford to wait for another incident like this to happen,” said a spokesperson. “We are committed to ensuring that all buildings in Malta meet the highest safety standards.”
Meanwhile, the maintenance company involved has expressed its sympathies to the injured workers and their families. “We are cooperating fully with the investigation and will do everything in our power to ensure that this never happens again,” said a spokesperson.
