AI in HR: Malta’s Leaders Tackle People Management in the Age of AI
Imagine this: you’re walking down Republic Street in Valletta, Malta’s bustling capital, and you pass by a bustling cafĂ©. The barista greets you by name, recommends your favourite pastry, and has it ready before you even reach the counter. Welcome to the age of AI in people management.
AI: The New Barista?
AI is no longer just about futuristic sci-fi. It’s in our daily lives, from suggesting movies on Netflix to helping us find our way around Malta’s winding streets. But it’s also transforming the way we work. HR leaders in Malta and beyond are embracing AI to manage their teams, hire new talent, and navigate the ethical complexities of data-driven decision making.
AI in Hiring: A Match Made in Heaven?
AI can sift through hundreds of CVs in seconds, finding the best match for a job. It can even conduct initial interviews, assessing candidates’ skills and cultural fit. But is it fair? Does it replicate human biases? These are questions keeping HR leaders up at night. Malta’s own HR specialist, Marilyn Muscat, warns, “AI can’t replace human intuition, but it can augment it. We need to ensure it’s used ethically and responsibly.”
Take the case of Altus, a local tech company. They use AI to screen CVs but ensure a human makes the final call. “AI helps us find the best candidates faster,” says CEO Jonathan Castagna, “but we believe in the human touch.”
Data Ethics: The Elephant in the Room
AI relies on data, and lots of it. But who owns that data? How is it used? How is privacy protected? These are thorny issues HR leaders must grapple with. Malta’s upcoming AI strategy, set to be launched later this year, promises to address these challenges. Minister for Economy, Investment and Small Business, Carlson Caruana, assures, “We’re committed to ethical AI. It’s not just about innovation, but about protecting our people and their data.”
Back in Valletta, the barista might know your order, but it’s the human connection that keeps you coming back. AI in HR is much the same. It can streamline processes, provide valuable insights, but it’s the human touch that makes it truly effective.
