AI in HR: Malta’s Leaders Tackle the Future

Imagine this: you’re sitting in your office at the Tigne Point in Sliema, scrolling through CVs, when suddenly, an AI suggests a candidate you’d never have considered. Welcome to the new era of HR, where AI is transforming people management, and data ethics are the new buzzword. But how is Malta’s HR scene adapting to these changes?

AI in HR: Friend or Foe?

AI is no longer a futuristic concept. It’s here, and it’s making waves in HR. From screening resumes to predicting employee churn, AI is streamlining processes and providing valuable insights. But it’s not all sunshine and roses. Biases in AI algorithms can lead to unfair hiring practices, and privacy concerns are on the rise.

Local HR leaders are aware of these challenges. “AI has the potential to revolutionize HR, but we must ensure it’s used ethically,” says Marcella Mifsud, HR Director at Gaming Malta. She emphasizes the importance of regular audits to identify and mitigate biases.

Data Ethics: The New Frontier

Data is the lifeblood of AI, but it’s also a double-edged sword. HR departments are collecting vast amounts of employee data, from performance metrics to health information. The question is: how much is too much?

Malta’s Data Protection Act, 2018, aligns with the EU’s GDPR, providing a solid framework for data protection. However, HR professionals must go beyond compliance. “It’s about transparency, consent, and respect for employee privacy,” says John Tedeschi, HR Manager at MedComms Group.

Hiring in the AI Era: Skills for the Future

AI is not just changing how we hire; it’s changing who we hire. Soft skills, digital literacy, and adaptability are now crucial. But how can HR ensure they’re attracting the right talent?

Upskilling and reskilling are key. The Malta Enterprise is working with local companies to provide training programs that prepare employees for the AI era. “It’s not just about teaching people to use AI tools,” says Marcel Borg, HR Manager at Betsson. “It’s about fostering a culture of continuous learning.”

As AI continues to reshape the HR scene, Malta’s HR leaders are rising to the challenge. They’re not just embracing AI; they’re ensuring it’s used responsibly. After all, it’s not just about hiring the best talent. It’s about being the best at hiring.
