Garage Rape Allegations: Accused Denied Bail

In the heart of Birkirkara, a woman’s cries for help echoed through a quiet garage on a seemingly ordinary evening. The alleged victim, a 28-year-old local resident, has since bravely spoken out, claiming she was raped twice by a man she knew. The alleged aggressor, a 35-year-old Maltese national, has been denied bail following his arrest.

Allegations and Arrest

The woman’s harrowing ordeal unfolded on the night of February 14th. According to her statement to the police, she was first raped in the garage on Triq il-Kbira, Birkirkara, before being forced into a car and raped again. The accused, a resident of nearby Msida, was arrested the following day and charged with rape and abduction.

Superintendent of Police, Mario Bonnici, confirmed the arrest and charges, stating, “The accused was arrested following a thorough investigation by the Birkirkara Police Station. The evidence gathered so far supports the victim’s account, and we are treating this case with the utmost seriousness.”

Bail Denied

During the accused’s arraignment at the Magistrates’ Court in Valletta, the prosecution successfully argued for his detention. Inspector Keith Mercieca, prosecuting, presented evidence suggesting the accused posed a flight risk and a threat to the victim. The court concurred, denying the accused bail and remanding him in custody.

Defending lawyer, Joseph Giglio, argued for bail, citing his client’s clean record and family ties. However, the court ruled that the gravity of the charges and the risk of interference with witnesses warranted detention.

Support and Next Steps

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been receiving support from the Victim Support Malta organisation. A spokesperson for the organisation said, “We commend the victim’s courage in coming forward and assure her that we will continue to support her throughout the legal process.”

The case will proceed to the courts, with the next hearing scheduled for March 15th. The accused has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
