Floating Padel: Marsa Shipyard’s Novel Proposal

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but bobbing gently on the waters of Marsa’s Grand Harbour. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic movie, but a real proposal submitted by a local ship repair company. The company, which operates from the Marsa Shipyard, has applied to set up a floating padel court on a barge.

Why a Padel Court on a Barge?

The company, in their application to Malta’s Planning Authority, cited the lack of space on land as the primary reason for this innovative proposal. Marsa, an industrial area, is indeed tight on space, with most land earmarked for industrial use. The company reasoned that a barge would provide the necessary space without encroaching on land.

the barge, equipped with a padel court, could potentially serve as a unique attraction, drawing sports enthusiasts and tourists alike to the Marsa waterfront. It could also provide a novel setting for corporate events or social gatherings.

Floating Sports: A First for Malta?

If approved, this would be a first for Malta. While floating structures are not uncommon in the Grand Harbour – think of the Three Cities’ ferry terminals – a floating sports court is a novel concept. The proposal has sparked curiosity and debate among locals, with some hailing it as an innovative use of space, while others question its practicality and impact on the environment.

Environmental concerns include potential noise pollution and the impact on marine life. The company, however, has assured that the barge will be equipped with noise-reducing materials and that the court will be designed to minimize environmental impact.

For now, the Planning Authority is still reviewing the application. If approved, the floating padel court could be a unique addition to Malta’s sports scene, offering players a truly unique setting to enjoy their favourite sport. It could also add a new dimension to Marsa’s waterfront, transforming it into a hub for both industry and leisure.
