Floriana’s Pinetum: From Secret Garden to Public Park

Floriana’s Hidden Gem Unveiled: Pinetum’s Transformation Begins

If you’ve ever strolled along St. Publius Street in Floriana, you might have noticed the towering pine trees peeking over the high walls, hinting at the green oasis hidden within. That green oasis is Pinetum, and it’s about to become Floriana’s newest public park.

Unlocking Pinetum’s Potential

For years, Pinetum has been a well-kept secret, accessible only to a few. But that’s all about to change. The Floriana Local Council, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, has embarked on a project to transform this 1.5-hectare plot into a public park. The aim? To create a green lung in the heart of Floriana, a space where residents and visitors alike can relax, play, and connect with nature.

But Pinetum’s potential doesn’t stop at being a beautiful green space. It’s also a piece of Floriana’s history. The site was once part of the Grandmaster’s gardens, and its name, derived from the Latin ‘pinetum’, refers to the pine trees that have dominated the scene for centuries. By opening Pinetum to the public, we’re not just creating a park; we’re unlocking a piece of Floriana’s past.

What’s in Store for Pinetum?

So, what can we expect from the new Pinetum public park? The plans are ambitious and exciting. Din l-Art Ħelwa has been working tirelessly to restore the historic structures within the park, including a neoclassical pavilion and a water tank. These will be transformed into community spaces, perfect for events, workshops, and gatherings.

The green spaces will also be revamped, with new paths, seating areas, and even a children’s play area. And, of course, the pine trees will remain, providing shade and a sense of tranquility amidst the bustling town.

But the plans for Pinetum aren’t just about bricks and mortar. They’re also about community. The project is being designed with input from Floriana residents, ensuring that the park caters to the needs and wishes of the people who will use it most.
