Malta Man Jailed 8 Years for Violent Home Invasion

In the early hours of a quiet Tuesday morning, a peaceful residential street in Msida was shattered by the sound of breaking glass and desperate screams. The target? A seemingly ordinary apartment, home to a family who would soon find their world turned upside down.

Armed Robbery Gone Wrong

On the night of 14th February, a man, later identified as 32-year-old Malta resident, Joseph Camilleri, broke into the apartment of the Bonello family, armed with a knife and a gun. The family, consisting of parents and their two young children, were asleep when Camilleri forced his way in, demanding money and valuables. The terrified family complied, but the intruder’s greed led him to demand more, resulting in a struggle that ended with the father, Mr. Mario Bonello, sustaining serious injuries.

Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, called the police. When they arrived, they found Camilleri attempting to flee the scene, still in possession of the stolen items. A chase ensued, ending with Camilleri’s arrest on the bustling Triq San Pawl in Msida.

Justice Served

Following a lengthy trial, during which the Bonello family bravely testified, Camilleri was found guilty of armed robbery, aggravated burglary, and causing grievous bodily harm. On Friday, Judge Joseph Mifsud sentenced Camilleri to eight years in prison, stating that the crime was “a brutal attack on the sanctity of the home and the safety of its occupants.”

This sentence sends a strong message to would-be criminals that such violent acts will not be tolerated in our community. It also brings a sense of closure to the Bonello family, who have been through a harrowing ordeal. Speaking to Hot Malta, Mrs. Lisa Bonello expressed her relief, “Today, we can finally start to heal and move on. Our home was violated, but our strength as a family has only grown.”

Prevention and Support

In light of this incident, the Malta Police Force has reminded residents to always keep their doors and windows locked, even when at home. They also encourage anyone who notices suspicious activity to report it immediately. For those affected by crime, the Victim Support Malta organisation offers free, confidential support and assistance.

, let us remember the Bonello family in our thoughts and be grateful for the justice served. Let us also remain vigilant, looking out for one another in our communities, and ensuring that our homes remain safe havens for our families.
