Malta’s ‘Carmen’: A Modern Makeover for Opera Lovers

Imagine this: the bustling streets of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, echo with the strains of Bizet’s ‘Habanera’. But this isn’t your grandma’s opera. This is ‘Carmen’, reimagined for a new generation, set to premiere at the historic Teatru Manoel. So, why is this classic getting a modern makeover, and what can Malta’s opera lovers expect?

Why Reimagine Carmen?

In the heart of Malta’s cultural scene, Teatru Manoel is breathing new life into old classics. “Opera shouldn’t be a stuffy, dusty relic,” says artistic director, Kenneth Zammit Tabona. “We want to make it accessible, exciting, and relevant to today’s audiences.”

Enter ‘Carmen’, Bizet’s sultry tale of love, betrayal, and fate. Set in 19th-century Spain, it’s a period piece that’s been given a 21st-century facelift. “We’re updating the setting, the costumes, even the staging,” Zammit Tabona reveals. “But we’re not changing the story. It’s still Carmen, the fiery gypsy, and Don José, the soldier who falls for her. It’s just… more Malta, more now.”

From Seville to Strait Street

So, what does ‘more Malta, more now’ mean? For starters, it means trading Seville’s sun-drenched plazas for the narrow, neon-lit streets of Malta’s Strait Street. “It’s our little bit of local color,” Zammit Tabona explains. “Strait Street was once Malta’s red-light district, full of life, full of stories. It’s the perfect setting for Carmen’s world of passion and danger.”

But it’s not just about the setting. The production is also embracing Malta’s multicultural spirit. “We’re casting locally,” Zammit Tabona says. “And we’re not just looking for singers. We want dancers, actors, even street performers. We want our ‘Carmen’ to be a true reflection of Malta today.”

What to Expect

If you’re expecting plush velvet seats and formal attire, think again. Teatru Manoel is transforming its historic space into an immersive, interactive experience. “We want the audience to feel like they’re part of the story,” Zammit Tabona says. “So, expect surprises, expect to move around, expect to engage.”

And what about the music? Bizet’s score will still be at the heart of the production, but expect to hear it in new ways. “We’re working with a brilliant young composer who’s giving our ‘Carmen’ a modern musical twist,” Zammit Tabona hints. “It’s still Bizet, but with a beat you can dance to.”

So, Malta, are you ready to see ‘Carmen’ like you’ve never seen her before? Get ready to ditch the tuxedos and tutus. This is opera for the Instagram age, opera for the streets of Strait Street, opera for you.
