Malta Reimagining ‘Carmen’ for a new generation

Malta’s ‘Carmen’ Gets a Modern Makeover

Imagine this: a packed Teatru Manoel, Malta’s historic theatre, buzzing with a new kind of energy. The orchestra tunes up, the lights dim, and instead of the traditional ‘Carmen’ we all know, the stage lights up to reveal a modern twist. This is not your grandma’s opera.

Opera for the Instagram Age

Malta’s leading opera company, Teatru Manoel Productions, is giving Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ a 21st-century makeover. Gone are the dusty sets and period costumes. In comes a vibrant, contemporary staging that’s more ‘La La Land’ than ‘La Bohème’.

“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” says artistic director, Kenneth Zammit Tabona. “But we are giving ‘Carmen’ a facelift, making it more relatable to today’s audiences.”

Malta’s Own Carmen

At the helm of this reimagined ‘Carmen’ is Maltese soprano, Miriam Gauci, who’s no stranger to the role. But this time, she’s not just singing Carmen; she’s co-directing the production. “It’s a chance to put our own stamp on this classic,” she says. “We’re drawing inspiration from Malta’s own culture and history.”

Think of Carmen’s fiery spirit as a Maltese woman’s resilience, her defiance echoing the island’s struggle against foreign rule. The bustling streets of Seville become the vibrant markets of Valletta or Mdina. Even the iconic ‘Habanera’ gets a local twist, with Maltese folk influences weaving into Bizet’s score.

Opera for Everyone

But this isn’t just about making ‘Carmen’ Maltese. It’s about making opera accessible. “We want to challenge the stereotype of opera being stuffy and elitist,” says Zammit Tabona. “We’re lowering the barriers, making it more inclusive.”

That means no more formal dress codes, no more stuffy silence between acts. The Teatru Manoel bar will be open throughout the performance, and there’ll be pre-show talks to help first-timers navigate the opera world. Tickets are also more affordable, with special prices for students and under-30s.

So, are you ready to see ‘Carmen’ like never before? To hear Bizet’s music echo through the historic walls of Teatru Manoel, but with a beat that’s distinctly 21st century? This is opera for the Instagram age, for the Netflix generation. This is ‘Carmen’ reimagined.
