Malta’s Firework Symphony: The Man Behind the Magic

Malta’s Pyro-Pianist: The Man Behind the Firework Symphony

Imagine a symphony orchestra, but instead of violins and cellos, it’s composed of fireworks. This isn’t a fantasy, but a reality created by Malta’s very own, Ray Attard. The 52-year-old resident of Birkirkara has been setting the skies alight with his unique firework musical compositions for over two decades.

From Garage to Grand Finale

Ray’s journey began in his garage, where he started experimenting with fireworks as a hobby. He soon realised that by synchronising the explosions with music, he could create a unique symphony. “I started with simple beats, then moved on to melodies,” he recalls. Today, his compositions range from Maltese folk tunes to international hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

Ray’s work has evolved significantly since those early days. He now uses computer software to programme his firework displays, ensuring each explosion corresponds perfectly with the musical notes. His shows have become a staple at local events, including the annual Independence Day celebrations at Grandmaster’s Square in Valletta.

Safety First, Then the Boom

Despite the spectacle, safety is Ray’s top priority. He holds a license from the Civil Protection Department and adheres strictly to their regulations. His displays are set off from safe distances, and he always ensures there are no flammable materials nearby. “I want people to enjoy the show without any worries,” he says.

Ray’s work has gained international recognition. He’s been invited to display his art in Italy, France, and even the United Arab Emirates. Yet, he remains humble about his achievements. “I’m just a guy from Birkirkara who loves fireworks and music,” he says with a smile.

, Ray plans to continue pushing the boundaries of his art. He’s currently working on a display that will synchronise fireworks with a live orchestra. “It’s a challenging project, but I believe it’s possible,” he says, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
