Man Jailed 8 Years for Violent Birkirkara Home Invasion
In the early hours of a balmy Maltese summer night, a man, armed and dangerous, shattered the tranquility of a quiet residential street in Birkirkara. His target? A family asleep in their terraced house, unsuspecting of the violent intrusion that was about to unfold.
Armed and Fearless
The man, identified by the courts as 32-year-old Matthew Vella, was sentenced to eight years in prison this week for his role in the violent armed robbery and home invasion that left the family terrified and their home ransacked. Vella, a native of Msida, was found guilty of breaking into the Birkirkara home, threatening the family at knifepoint, and making off with a substantial sum of money and valuables.
A Night of Terror
The family, who wish to remain anonymous, recounted their harrowing experience to Hot Malta. “We woke up to the sound of breaking glass,” said the father. “Vella was in our house, threatening us with a knife. He demanded money and valuables, and we had no choice but to comply.” The family was held at knifepoint while Vella ransacked their home, causing extensive damage in his search for valuables.
The family’s ordeal didn’t end with Vella’s departure. They were left shaken, their sense of security shattered. “We felt violated,” the mother said. “Our home, our sanctuary, was no longer a safe place.” The family moved out shortly after the incident, unable to bear the constant reminders of that terrifying night.
Justice Served
Vella’s arrest came after a tip-off from the public and a subsequent police investigation. During his trial, the court heard how Vella had planned the robbery, targeting the family due to their perceived wealth. The court also heard how Vella had previous convictions for similar offenses, making this his third strike.
Sentencing Vella to eight years in prison, the presiding judge described the crime as a “heinous and violent intrusion into the sanctity of a family home.” The judge also praised the family for their courage in testifying against Vella, stating that their testimony was instrumental in securing a guilty verdict.
Reacting to the sentencing, the family’s lawyer, Joseph Giglio, told Hot Malta, “Today, justice has been served. My clients can finally begin to move on from this traumatic experience, knowing that the man who violated their home and threatened their lives is behind bars.”
