Man Jailed for Eight Years Over Violent Armed Robbery, Home Invasion
In the early hours of a quiet Sunday morning, a peaceful residential street in Birkirkara was shattered by the sound of breaking glass and desperate screams. The target? A seemingly ordinary townhouse, hiding a small fortune in cash. The culprit? A man who, today, began an eight-year journey behind bars.
Armed and Dangerous
The 32-year-old man, a native of Msida, was sentenced yesterday at the Criminal Court after pleading guilty to a violent armed robbery and home invasion that took place last year. The victim, a 55-year-old businessman, was at home with his wife when the terrifying ordeal unfolded.
The man, armed with a knife and a screwdriver, gained entry to the property by smashing a window. He then threatened the couple, tying them up and ransacking the house. The businessman had recently withdrawn a large sum of money to pay for a property, a fact that had not gone unnoticed by the defendant.
Caught on Camera
The incident was captured on the victim’s CCTV system, providing crucial evidence that led to the man’s arrest just days later. The footage, which has not been made public, showed the man’s distinctive tattoos and clothing, leaving him with little room to deny his involvement.
Speaking outside the court, the victim’s daughter expressed relief at the sentence. “It’s been a long, stressful year,” she said. “Today’s sentence brings a sense of justice, but it won’t erase the trauma my parents have been through.”
A History of Crime
The man, who has a string of previous convictions, showed no remorse during the court proceedings. In fact, he initially denied the charges, only changing his plea at the last minute. The court heard how he had been released from prison just months before the robbery, despite concerns raised by probation officers about his suitability for release.
In his sentencing remarks, the presiding judge described the man’s actions as “callous and brutal,” adding that his criminal history showed a “complete disregard for the law and the safety of others.”
The businessman’s daughter hopes that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to others. “We want people to know that crime doesn’t pay,” she said. “Our justice system may be slow, but it’s not blind.”
