Man Threatens Wife Over Burnt Food in Birkirkara

In the quiet residential street of Triq San Ġorġ, Birkirkara, a heated argument over burnt food took a disturbing turn last week. A man, identified as 45-year-old Joseph Vella, allegedly threatened his wife with a wheelchair after she served him overcooked pasta.

Threats and Intimidation

According to the victim, who wished to remain anonymous, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening. She had been preparing dinner for the couple when she accidentally left the pasta on the stove for too long. When Vella tasted the meal, he flew into a rage.

“He started shouting, saying I couldn’t even cook a simple meal right,” she recounted. “Then he said, ‘I’ll put you in a wheelchair, you won’t be able to run away from me then.'” The woman, visibly shaken, reported the incident to the police the following day.

Police Intervention

The Malta Police Force confirmed that they had arrested Vella on charges of criminal intimidation and threats. He was released on bail pending further investigations. The police also offered support services to the victim, encouraging her to seek help if needed.

“We take such threats seriously,” said a spokesperson for the police. “We urge anyone in a similar situation to come forward and report it. No one deserves to live in fear in their own home.”

Community Reaction

Neighbours expressed shock at the incident. “They seemed like a normal couple,” said one neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous. “I never thought something like this could happen here. It’s scary to think it goes on behind closed doors.”

Local councillor, Mario Portelli, condemned the incident. “Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects our community. We need to stand together and support the victims. If you or someone you know is in such a situation, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help.”

Malta’s Women’s Rights Foundation echoed Portelli’s sentiments, offering their support and resources to the victim. “We are here to help,” said a spokesperson. “No one should have to endure such threats and intimidation.”
