Naxxar Mayor Demands Stricter Caravan Enforcement

Caravans vs Coastline: Naxxar Mayor Calls for Tougher Action

Picture this: The sun is setting over the picturesque Naxxar coast, but the view is marred by a line of caravans parked along the promenade. This is not a rare sight in the bustling town, but it’s one that Mayor Dorisleanne Galea is determined to change. She’s calling for stricter enforcement to keep public coastlines clear and accessible to all.

Caravans: A Blessing or a Nuisance?

Caravans have long been a part of Maltese culture, offering affordable holidays by the sea. However, when they block public spaces, they become more than just an eyesore. They hinder access to the coast for residents and tourists alike, and pose safety risks, especially during emergencies. Yet, enforcement has been lax, allowing the problem to persist.

“We’re not against caravans,” Mayor Galea clarifies, “but they should not be allowed to park anywhere they please, blocking access to our coast. It’s about balance and respect for public spaces.”

Stricter Enforcement: A Step in the Right Direction

Galea is pushing for stricter fines and better enforcement. She proposes designating specific areas for caravan parking, with strict time limits. She also wants to see better signage and increased patrols to ensure compliance. “We need to send a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated,” she says.

But change won’t happen overnight. It requires cooperation from caravan owners, better infrastructure, and stricter enforcement from local councils and the police. And while some caravan owners may resist, many understand the need for change. “We want to enjoy the coast too,” says Joe, a regular caravan user from Msida, “but not at the expense of others.”

Naxxar is not alone in facing this issue. Towns like Sliema, St. Julian’s, and even rural areas like Marsascala and Marsaxlokk grapple with similar problems. If Naxxar’s push for stricter enforcement succeeds, it could set a precedent for other localities to follow.

As the sun sets over the Naxxar coast, the caravans remain, but the tide is turning. With Mayor Galea’s determination and community support, the future of Malta’s coastlines could look very different.
