Padel Court on a Barge: Marsa’s Novel Proposal

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not nestled in a Maltese backyard or perched on a rooftop, but bobbing gently on the waves in Marsa. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic movie, but a proposal submitted by a local ship repair company. The company has applied to set up a temporary padel court on a barge in the Marsa Industrial Estate, sparking curiosity and debate among locals.

From Ships to Sports: A Novel Idea

The brainchild of Capt. Joe Xuereb, the director of the ship repair company, this unique idea is a response to the high demand for padel courts in Malta. “We have the space, we have the barge, and we have the demand,” Xuereb told Hot Malta. “Why not combine the three?”

Marsa, once a bustling industrial hub, is no stranger to innovation. From its historic shipyards to its modern-day industries, the area has always been a melting pot of ideas. This proposal, however, is a first for the region.

Navigating the Waters of Regulation

The proposal has set sail, but it’s not smooth sailing yet. The company has submitted its application to the Malta Maritime Authority, but the path to approval is not without its challenges. Noise pollution, safety regulations, and environmental impact are just a few of the factors that need to be navigated.

Dr. Mario Mallia, a local environmentalist, welcomes the creativity but raises concerns. “While the idea is innovative, we must ensure it doesn’t come at the cost of our environment or the quality of life of Marsa residents,” he said.

If approved, the padel court on a barge could become a unique attraction in Malta’s sports scene. It could also serve as a testament to the island’s adaptability and willingness to think outside the box. But for now, all eyes are on the Malta Maritime Authority, waiting for their verdict on this novel proposal.
