PN Demands Transparency: Calls for KM Malta’s Financials

Malta’s Opposition Party, the Nationalist Party (PN), has upped the ante in its quest for government accountability. In a recent parliamentary question, PN MP Jason Azzopardi demanded that the government publish the financial statements of the Malta Industrial Parks plc (KM Malta). The company, owned by the government, manages the country’s industrial estates, including the sprawling Marsa Industrial Park.

Marsa Industrial Park: A Case in Point

Sprawling across 1.2 million square metres, the Marsa Industrial Park is a critical economic hub. It’s home to over 200 businesses, employing thousands of Maltese. Yet, despite its significance, the financial health of KM Malta, the entity managing this park, remains shrouded in secrecy. The PN argues that the public has a right to know how taxpayers’ money is being used.

PN’s Push for Transparency

MP Azzopardi, speaking in Parliament, questioned why KM Malta’s financial statements are not published, unlike those of other government-owned companies. He pointed out that the company’s annual report for 2020 is still not available, raising concerns about potential mismanagement or worse, corruption. The PN is not alone in its call for transparency. Civil society groups and even some government backbenchers have echoed similar sentiments.

The government, however, has been evasive. Minister for Economy and Industry, Silvio Schembri, responded to Azzopardi’s question by stating that the financial statements are being prepared and will be published “in due course.” But for the PN and its supporters, this is not enough. They argue that the government’s lack of transparency is fueling public suspicion and undermining trust in institutions.

As the political drama unfolds, one thing is clear: the people of Malta deserve to know how their money is being spent. Whether it’s in the bustling streets of Marsa, the hallowed halls of Parliament, or the quiet corridors of KM Malta’s offices, transparency should be the watchword. The ball is now in the government’s court. Will they step up and publish the financial statements, or will they continue to play keep-away with the public’s right to know?
