Reimagining ‘Carmen’ for Malta’s Streets

Imagine, if you will, the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the sun dipping below the Grandmaster’s Palace, and the usual hum of tourists and locals replaced by the haunting melody of a familiar opera tune. This isn’t a scene from a period drama, but a glimpse into the future of opera in Malta, as the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and Teatru Salesjan are set to reimagine ‘Carmen’ for a new generation.

From Bizet to the 21st Century

George Frendo, the MPO’s artistic director, has taken it upon himself to breathe new life into Bizet’s classic opera. ‘Carmen’ is no stranger to Malta, having graced the stages of the Manoel Theatre and Teatru Astra. But Frendo’s vision is to make it more accessible, more relatable, and dare we say, more ‘Malta’ than ever before.

In an era where classical music is often perceived as elitist and outdated, Frendo is determined to challenge this notion. “We want to show that opera can be exciting, relevant, and enjoyable for everyone,” he says. “And what better way to do that than by bringing it to the heart of our capital city?”

Malta’s Own Carmen

One of the most exciting aspects of this production is the casting. While the lead roles will be filled by international opera stars, Frendo has made a conscious effort to include local talent. “We have some incredible singers here in Malta,” he says. “It’s important for us to showcase their talent and give them the opportunity to perform alongside some of the best in the business.”

But Frendo’s vision doesn’t stop at the casting. He wants to make ‘Carmen’ truly Maltese. “We’re not just setting it in Seville,” he says. “We’re bringing it to Malta. Expect to see some familiar locations, from the Three Cities to the Rabat countryside.” This isn’t just an opera; it’s a love letter to Malta.

Opera for Everyone

But how do you make opera accessible to a new generation? Frendo’s answer is simple: make it free. “We want everyone to have the opportunity to experience opera,” he says. “Whether you’re a seasoned opera-goer or you’ve never set foot in a theatre, we want you to come and enjoy ‘Carmen’ with us.”

And enjoy it they will. With a story of love, betrayal, and tragedy, ‘Carmen’ has all the hallmarks of a modern-day soap opera. Add to that Bizet’s unforgettable music, and you have a recipe for a night to remember.

So, mark your calendars, Malta. This summer, opera is coming to the streets. And it’s not to be missed.
