Truck Fire on Marfa Road Causes Traffic Chaos
Flames Lick Marfa Road: Truck Inferno Causes Traffic Chaos
Drivers on Marfa Road were met with an unexpected spectacle on Tuesday afternoon as a truck, laden with cargo, burst into flames mid-journey. The blaze, which sent plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky, caused traffic to grind to a halt and had motorists reaching for their phones to capture the dramatic scene.
Firefighters Battle Blazing Cargo
The Malta Fire Rescue Service swiftly arrived at the scene, finding the truck engulfed in flames. The intense heat and the nature of the cargo – pallets of plastic goods – made their task challenging. Firefighters had to ensure the fire didn’t spread to nearby vehicles or the surrounding vegetation, which could have exacerbated the situation.
“We received calls reporting a large fire on Marfa Road,” said a spokesperson for the MFRS. “Our crews worked swiftly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. It was a complex operation, but thankfully, no one was injured.”
Traffic Nightmare and Delays
The incident caused significant traffic delays, with motorists stuck in queues for hours. Commuters heading towards Birkirkara and surrounding areas were particularly affected. The Police, along with the MFRS, worked to direct traffic and keep motorists informed.
“I was stuck in traffic for over an hour,” said Joe, a frustrated driver. “I could see the smoke from miles away, but I had no idea what was causing it. It was quite a shock to see a truck on fire when I finally reached the scene.”
Traffic was diverted via alternative routes, with some motorists opting to use the Birkirkara bypass to avoid the congestion. The clean-up operation took several hours, with the charred remains of the truck and its cargo finally cleared by late evening.
