Truck Inferno on Marfa Road Causes Chaos

Smoke and Flames: Truck Inferno on Marfa Road

Drivers on Marfa Road had a rude awakening this morning as a truck transformed into a fireball, blocking traffic and sending plumes of smoke into the air. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 AM near the junction with Triq l-Imqabba, caused a stir among commuters and residents alike.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) swiftly responded to the emergency, with two tenders and a rescue vehicle rushing to the scene. Firefighters battled the intense flames, which engulfed the truck’s cab and spread to its cargo. The fire was eventually brought under control after about 45 minutes, but not before causing significant damage to the vehicle and nearby infrastructure.

Traffic Chaos and Nearby Residents Evacuated

The blaze caused major traffic disruptions, with Marfa Road closed in both directions. Motorists were diverted through nearby streets, causing congestion in areas like Triq il-Kbira and Triq San Ġorġ Preca. Residents in the vicinity were temporarily evacuated as a precaution, with some reporting feeling the heat of the fire in their homes.

No injuries were reported, but the incident has raised questions about the safety of truck maintenance and the potential hazards of fuel leaks. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with authorities not ruling out mechanical failure or an electrical short circuit.

This is not the first time a truck fire has caused chaos on Malta’s roads. In 2019, a similar incident on the Mrieħel Bypass led to hours of traffic delays. These incidents highlight the need for regular vehicle maintenance and safety checks, especially for heavy goods vehicles.

As the cleanup operation continues on Marfa Road, commuters are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid potential delays. The MFA has reminded the public of the importance of fire safety, urging everyone to ensure their vehicles are in good working order and to report any suspicious activities or fuel leaks.
