Two Workers Fall Down Apartment Block Shaft in Valletta
Imagine standing on Republic Street, Malta’s bustling main thoroughfare, looking up at the towering apartment blocks that line the street. Now, imagine two workers suddenly disappearing from view, swallowed by a dark shaft leading into the building’s bowels. This was the horrifying scene that unfolded yesterday afternoon, as two construction workers fell down an unguarded shaft at an apartment block under construction.
Rescue Operation Launched
The incident occurred around 2 PM at a construction site near the corner of Republic Street and Merchants Street, in the heart of Valletta. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the two workers, both in their late twenties, plummeting down the open shaft, which was left unguarded despite being over 10 meters deep. The workers were immediately trapped, with one of them sustaining severe injuries.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene, with the Civil Protection Department leading the rescue operation. Firefighters had to drill through concrete to reach the trapped workers, a painstaking process that took over three hours. The injured worker was eventually pulled out and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. The other worker was fortunate to escape with minor injuries.
Safety Concerns Raised
This incident has once again raised serious questions about safety standards on Maltese construction sites. While the construction industry has seen significant growth in recent years, so have reports of workplace accidents. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA), there were over 1,000 reported accidents in the construction sector last year alone.
Local politicians have been quick to condemn the incident, with Opposition spokesperson for Infrastructure and Transport, Jason Azzopardi, stating, “This is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations on construction sites.” The Malta Developers Association has also issued a statement, promising to work with authorities to improve safety standards in the industry.
Investigation Underway
The incident is currently under investigation by the OHSA, with reports suggesting that the site’s safety measures may have been inadequate. The site’s contractor, a local construction firm, has declined to comment pending the outcome of the investigation.
In the meantime, the incident has left residents and workers in the area shaken. “It’s terrifying to think that something like this could happen so close to home,” said Maria, a local shop owner who witnessed the incident. “We need to make sure that our workers are safe, especially in such a busy area like Valletta.”
