Two Workers Plummet in St. Julian’s Apartment Block Shaft

Imagine, if you will, the eerie silence of a construction site at dawn, broken only by the distant hum of a city waking up. Now imagine that silence being shattered by the sickening thud of two men falling through the darkness of an apartment block shaft. This was the grim reality that greeted workers and residents of St. Julian’s on Tuesday morning.

Two Fall Through Unprotected Shaft

In a chilling incident that has through Malta’s construction community, two workers fell through an unprotected shaft at an apartment block under construction in St. Julian’s. The men, both in their 30s, plummeted some 15 meters down the shaft, miraculously surviving the fall with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Rescue Operation Launched

The incident, which occurred around 7:30 AM, sparked a swift response from emergency services. Fire and Rescue Services, along with an ambulance crew, rushed to the scene at Triq San Ġużepp, where they launched a delicate rescue operation. Firefighters carefully extricated the injured workers from the shaft, before they were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.

Safety Concerns Raised

The incident has raised serious questions about safety standards on Malta’s construction sites. While the exact cause of the fall is still under investigation, initial reports suggest that there was no safety barrier or netting around the shaft at the time of the incident. This has led to calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and better training for workers.

Malta’s construction industry has seen rapid growth in recent years, with numerous high-rise projects springing up across the islands. However, this growth has also been accompanied by a worrying increase in workplace accidents. According to the Malta Union of Construction Workers, there were 148 workplace accidents in the construction sector last year alone.

In response to the incident, the Malta Union of Construction Workers has called for a thorough investigation into the safety measures in place at the St. Julian’s site. They have also urged the government to take immediate action to improve safety standards across the industry.

“This could have been a double tragedy,” said a spokesperson for the union. “We need to ensure that all construction sites have adequate safety measures in place to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

Meanwhile, the developer of the apartment block, who declined to comment on the record, has promised a full investigation into the incident. They have also assured residents and workers that safety is their top priority.
