Food Poisoning Outbreak: 47 Hospitalised in St. Julian’s Incident
In the heart of Malta’s bustling St. Julian’s, an evening of dining turned into a night of distress for 47 people who were rushed to hospital after a suspected mass food poisoning incident. The incident, which unfolded at a popular restaurant on Triq Sant’ Andrija, has left the local community and health authorities on high alert.
Symptoms and Response
The first calls to the emergency services started pouring in around 9 pm on Saturday. Victims, who had dined at the restaurant earlier in the evening, reported symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. The Malta Medical Association’s Dr. Keith Sciberras described the situation as “rare” for the area, with the number of affected individuals rapidly escalating.
Ambulances were swiftly dispatched to the scene, with some victims being treated on-site before being transported to Mater Dei Hospital. The hospital’s emergency department was put on high alert, with staff working tirelessly to manage the influx of patients. As of Sunday morning, all 47 individuals were stable and receiving appropriate treatment.
Investigation and Aftermath
The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate has launched an investigation into the incident. Samples of the suspected contaminated food have been collected and sent for testing. The restaurant, which has not been named pending the outcome of the investigation, has been temporarily closed for public health reasons.
In the meantime, the local council has issued a statement urging residents and tourists to remain vigilant. “We are working closely with health authorities to ensure the safety of our community,” said St. Julian’s Mayor, Gino Portelli. “We advise anyone who may have dined at the affected restaurant and is experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention immediately.”
The incident has also sparked conversations about food safety and hygiene standards in Malta’s bustling tourism industry. “This is a wake-up call for all of us,” said Dr. Sciberras. “We must ensure that our food establishments adhere to the highest standards of hygiene to prevent such incidents in the future.”
