Birkirkara Robbery: Man Jailed 8 Years

In a chilling turn of events, a man was sentenced to eight years in prison this week for a violent armed robbery that left a local family terrorised in their own home. The incident, which occurred in the quiet residential area of Birkirkara, has through the community, leaving neighbours on edge and sparking a conversation about home security.

Armed Robbery in Broad Daylight

The brazen robbery took place in broad daylight last summer, with the perpetrator, 32-year-old Matthew Vella, gaining entry to the family’s home on Triq San Ġorġ Preca by posing as a delivery man. Once inside, he produced a knife and demanded money, threatening the terrified family members who were present. The family, who wish to remain anonymous, described the ordeal as “a living nightmare”.

Community on Edge

The incident has left Birkirkara residents on high alert. Neighbours have been sharing safety tips and considering installing security systems. “We never thought something like this could happen here,” said one resident. “It’s made us all more cautious.” The local council has also stepped up patrols in the area, with police visible on the streets day and night.

Justice Served

Vella’s arrest came swiftly thanks to the family’s quick thinking and the police’s prompt response. CCTV footage from the neighbourhood helped identify the suspect, leading to his arrest just hours after the robbery. The trial, which concluded this week, saw Vella found guilty on all charges, with the judge handing down an eight-year sentence.

For the victimised family, the sentence brings a sense of closure. “We’re relieved that he’s off the streets and can’t harm anyone else,” said the family’s spokesperson. “But we’re also aware that this is a harsh reminder of the world we live in.”
