Lift Malfunction: CPD Rescues Five Trapped in St. Julian’s High-Rise

Imagine being stuck in a lift for over an hour, the panic rising with each passing minute. This was the reality for five individuals trapped in a lift at the Pender Gardens complex in St. Julian’s yesterday. Fortunately, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) was quick to respond, ensuring a safe rescue operation.

Emergency Callout

The incident occurred around 1:30 PM when the lift in the high-rise building malfunctioned, leaving the five occupants stranded. Panic buttons within the lift were pressed, alerting the building’s management and emergency services. The CPD’s specialized rescue team was swiftly dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the CPD team assessed the situation and decided on a rescue strategy. With the lift stuck between the 10th and 11th floors, the team had to carefully plan their approach. They decided to use their specialized rescue equipment to manually lower a rescue cage to the trapped individuals.

Rescue Operation

The operation, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, was a testament to the CPD’s professionalism and training. The rescue cage was lowered from the 11th floor, and one by one, the trapped individuals were carefully guided into the cage and lowered to safety.

Once all five were safely on the ground floor, they were immediately checked by medical personnel who had also been called to the scene. Fortunately, none of the individuals required hospitalization, a testament to the quick response and efficient handling of the situation by the CPD.

Residents of Pender Gardens expressed their relief and gratitude towards the CPD, highlighting the importance of such services in ensuring the safety and security of Malta’s residents.
