Dramatic Rescue at Comino’s Blue Lagoon
In a dramatic turn of events, a swift and courageous response from local lifeguards and bystanders saved a woman from drowning in the crystal-clear waters of Comino’s Blue Lagoon yesterday afternoon.
Rescue at the Blue Lagoon
The incident occurred around 3 PM when the woman, a 45-year-old tourist from Italy, found herself in distress while swimming in the popular lagoon. Witnesses reported that she had suddenly started struggling in the water, her cries for help echoing across the crowded beach.
Fortunately, a team of lifeguards from the Malta Lifeguard Association was on duty at the time. Led by experienced lifeguard, Matthew Attard, they swiftly sprang into action. “We were on the beach when we heard the commotion,” Attard recalled. “We rushed to the water’s edge, and I swam out to reach her as quickly as possible.”
Community Response
Attard’s quick thinking and bravery were bolstered by the help of fellow lifeguards and nearby tourists. A group of young men from France, who were holidaying in Malta, waded into the water to assist, helping to keep the woman afloat until Attard could reach her.
Once Attard reached the woman, he found her in a state of panic, gasping for breath. “I calmed her down, turned her onto her back, and started swimming towards the shore with her,” he said. With the help of the French tourists and the other lifeguards, they managed to get her safely back to the beach.
Aftermath and Praise
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department were quickly on the scene and treated the woman for shock and minor injuries. She was later taken to Gozo General Hospital for further observation.
The incident has sparked praise for the Malta Lifeguard Association and the quick-thinking bystanders who assisted in the rescue. “This is why we do what we do,” said Attard. “To ensure that everyone can enjoy our beautiful beaches safely.”
The Blue Lagoon, a stunning turquoise inlet on the island of Comino, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Despite its beauty, it’s important to remember that the lagoon’s waters can be deceptively strong, especially during peak summer months.
In light of this incident, the Malta Lifeguard Association has reminded the public of within their limits and always following lifeguard instructions. They also urge anyone who finds themselves in distress in the water to stay calm and float on their back to conserve energy.
