Floating Padel Court: Marsa’s Next Big Thing?

Barging In: A Padel Court on Water in Marsa?

Imagine this: a floating padel court, bobbing gently on the waves in Marsa’s Grand Harbour. It’s not a scene from a futuristic movie, but a proposal currently under consideration. Ship repair company, Grand Harbour Marina Ltd, has applied to build a padel court on a barge, sparking curiosity and debate among locals.

From Ship Repair to Padel Play

Grand Harbour Marina Ltd, based at the Marsa Sports Club, is known for its ship repair and maintenance services. But the company is now venturing into uncharted waters, seeking permission to construct a padel court on a barge moored in the harbour. The application, submitted to Malta’s Planning Authority, has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations among Marsa residents and padel enthusiasts alike.

Padel, a racket sport combining elements of tennis and squash, has gained significant popularity in Malta in recent years. With courts springing up across the island, from Msida to Żurrieq, the demand for more playing spaces is evident. But a floating court? That’s a first for Malta.

Floating Fun or Harbour Hassle?

Proponents argue that a floating padel court would offer unique views and a novel experience for players. It could also attract tourists, providing another quirky activity in Malta’s bustling tourism scene. the barge would be moored near the existing sports club, making it easily accessible for residents and visitors.

However, not everyone is thrilled about the idea. Some Marsa residents have expressed concerns about the visual impact on the harbour and potential noise pollution. Environmentalists are also keeping a watchful eye, ensuring the project doesn’t disrupt marine life or water quality.

Malta’s Planning Authority is currently reviewing the application. Public consultations are underway, giving locals and stakeholders a chance to voice their opinions. The authority is expected to make a decision in the coming months, determining whether Malta’s first floating padel court will indeed become a reality.
