Floating Padel Court: Marsa’s Next Big Thing?
Barging In: Padel Court on Water in Marsa?
Imagine this: a padel court bobbing gently on the water in Marsa. It’s not a mirage, but a proposal by a local ship repair company that’s got everyone talking. The company, which operates in the Marsa Industrial Park, has applied to build a floating padel court on a barge, adding a unique twist to Malta’s growing padel scene.
From Ships to Sports
Marsa, once a bustling port, has reinvented itself over the years. Now, it’s home to a mix of industries, including the ship repair company that’s behind this unusual proposal. The company, which has been servicing ships at Marsa’s drydocks for decades, is now looking to diversify its offerings. “We want to create a unique sports experience right here in Marsa,” a spokesperson told Hot Malta.
Padel, a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, has been gaining popularity in Malta. With courts springing up across the islands, the proposed floating court in Marsa could be the next big thing. But not everyone’s thrilled about the idea.
Splash or Flop?
While some welcome the prospect of a unique sports experience, others have raised concerns. Environmentalists worry about the impact on the surrounding marine life, while some residents question the need for another padel court in Malta. “We already have plenty of courts. Why not focus on improving existing facilities instead?” asked one Marsa resident.
On the other hand, local sports enthusiasts are excited. “It would be amazing to play padel with a view of the sea,” said a regular at the nearby Marsa Sports Club. The company behind the proposal is optimistic, too. “We believe this could be a breakthrough for Marsa,” they said.
The final decision lies with the Planning Authority. If approved, the floating padel court could be up and running by next summer. So, could Marsa be the next big thing in Malta’s padel scene? Only time, and the Planning Authority, will tell.
