Floating Padel Court Proposed for Marsa Creek

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but gently bobbing on the water in Marsa. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic movie, but a real proposal by a ship repair company. The company, based in the heart of Malta’s industrial hub, has applied to set up a floating padel court on a barge in the Marsa Creek.

Why Marsa Creek?

Marsa, a town steeped in history, has seen its fair share of changes. From a bustling naval port to an industrial powerhouse, it’s no stranger to innovation. The Marsa Creek, once a vital waterway, now serves as a calm backwater, home to various industries and a popular spot for leisure activities like fishing and boating. The applicant, eyeing this unique location, sees an opportunity to create a novel sports facility.

Floating Fun or Flawed Idea?

Padel, a racket sport combining elements of tennis and squash, is gaining traction in Malta. The proposal, if approved, would be a first-of-its-kind floating padel court. But not everyone is thrilled. Environmental concerns and safety issues have been raised. Some residents worry about the impact on wildlife and the potential hazards of playing sports on water.

“It’s an interesting idea, but I’m not sure about the safety aspect,” says Joe, a Marsa resident. “What happens if someone falls into the water? And what about the noise? It’s already quite peaceful here.”

The applicant, however, argues that the court would be safe and quiet, with high barriers and soundproofing measures in place. They also point out that the barge would be moored securely and only accessible by a gangway, ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

The Planning Authority is currently reviewing the application. If approved, the floating padel court could become a unique attraction in Malta, drawing sports enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike. But until then, the waters around Marsa Creek remain calm, awaiting the decision that could turn them into a sporting arena.
