Floating Padel: Marsa Barge Could Become Malta’s Unique Sports Venue
Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?
Imagine this: a padel court, not nestled in a Maltese backyard or perched atop a rooftop, but bobbing gently on the waters of Marsa’s Grand Harbour. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic film, but a proposal submitted by a local ship repair company, eager to make waves in the island’s padel scene.
From Ship Repair to Sports Court
The company, based in the heart of Marsa, has applied for a permit to transform a barge into a floating padel court. The proposal, submitted to the Malta Maritime Authority, has sparked curiosity and conversation among locals. The barge, currently moored near the Marsa Sports Club, could soon become the island’s most unique sports venue.
But why a padel court on a barge? The company’s director, when reached for comment, chuckled, “We’re always looking for innovative ways to utilise our resources. With the padel craze sweeping Malta, we thought, why not bring the court to the water?”
Navigating the Permits and Practicalities
The proposal is still in its early stages, with the company navigating the complexities of permits and regulations. The Malta Maritime Authority is currently reviewing the application, considering factors like safety, accessibility, and environmental impact. If approved, the barge would be converted into a fully functional padel court, complete with lighting, seating, and even a small café.
But it’s not just about the permits. The company is also considering the practicalities. “We’re looking into how to make it accessible, perhaps with a small gangway or even a shuttle service from the Marsa coastline,” the director explained. “And of course, we’ll ensure it’s safe and stable, with the court’s surface levelled and secure.”
Meanwhile, the local community is abuzz with excitement. “It’s a novel idea, that’s for sure,” said a Marsa resident. “I mean, who wouldn’t want to play padel with a view of the Grand Harbour?”
