Floating Padel: Marsa Barge Court Proposed
Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa
Picture this: the industrial scene of Marsa, Malta’s bustling port town, suddenly dotted with a… padel court? Yes, you read that right. A local ship repair company has applied to moor a barge-turned-padel-court right in the heart of Marsa’s Grand Harbour. Talk about a breakthrough!
From Barges to Courts: A Novel Idea
Malta’s love affair with padel is no secret. This fast-paced, social sport has taken the islands by storm, with courts cropping up everywhere from Msida to Mellieha. But a floating padel court? That’s a first, even for Malta’s innovative sports scene. The brainchild of Mediterranean Marine Services, the barge-based court could soon be a reality.
MM Services, based in Marsa, is no stranger to thinking outside the box. The company, which specializes in ship repair and conversion, has proposed to convert an old barge into a floating padel court. The barge, which would be moored near the Marsa Sports Club, would provide a unique venue for padel enthusiasts, with the added bonus of a stunning view of the Grand Harbour.
Navigating the Red Tape
Before we start planning our sea legs for a game of padel, there’s some red tape to navigate. MM Services has submitted a permit application to Malta’s Planning Authority, seeking permission to moor the barge and operate the padel court. The application is currently under review, with a decision expected in the coming months.
If approved, the padel court would be open to the public, with membership options and pay-as-you-go rates. The barge would also include changing facilities and a small cafĂ©, making it a one-stop-shop for padel players. But don’t expect to be playing under the stars just yet. The court would initially operate during daylight hours, with evening play a possibility if demand is high.
MM Services’ director, Mario Xuereb, is optimistic about the project. “We’re excited about the potential of this unique padel court,” he says. “It’s a great way to repurpose an old barge and provide a new, exciting venue for Malta’s padel community.”
