Gozo Channel: A Fourth Vessel on the Horizon

Imagine, for a moment, the bustling port of Ċirkewwa. The sun is a warm caress on your face, the sea stretches out before you, and the MV Ta’ Xbiex, a stalwart of the Gozo Channel fleet, is preparing to embark on its next journey. Now, picture this scene with an extra vessel, a new addition to the family, making waves and carrying passengers across the Malta-Gozo route. This isn’t just a daydream; it’s a possibility that’s got locals buzzing.

Gozo Channel’s Call for a New Companion

The Gozo Channel has issued a call for tender, seeking a company to lease a fourth vessel. This isn’t just about adding another boat to the fleet; it’s about enhancing the service, catering to the increasing demand, and ensuring that the channel remains a reliable lifeline between Malta and Gozo.

Why a Fourth Vessel?

With over 5 million passenger journeys annually, the Gozo Channel has its work cut out. The current fleet – the MV Ta’ Xbiex, the MV Salini, and the MV Gaudium – works tirelessly, but the demand is such that a fourth vessel could significantly improve the service. It could mean shorter waiting times, more frequent crossings, and perhaps even additional services like increased cargo capacity.

the new vessel could bring environmental benefits. With a modern, fuel-efficient engine, it could help reduce emissions, aligning with the government’s sustainability goals. It’s a win-win: better service for passengers and a cleaner channel for our marine life.

What’s Next?

The tender, which closes on the 14th of October, is open to both local and international companies. The successful bidder will lease the vessel to the Gozo Channel for a period of 10 years, with an option to renew. It’s an opportunity for a company to play a pivotal role in Malta’s connectivity, and for the Gozo Channel to strengthen its service.

So, could we soon be seeing a fourth vessel joining the Gozo Channel fleet? . But one thing’s for sure: the Ċirkewwa port will never look quite the same without that extra boat making its way towards the horizon.
